Emergency Information for residents

of East side of Tonto Creek

Residents of the East Side of Tonto Creek should be aware that Tonto Creek experiences flooding to the extent that crossing the creek is not possible.  Winter storms as well as summer monsoons may cause runoff that make the creek impassable.  This condition may last from hours to weeks depending on the time of the year.

Residents should prepare for emergencies by the following means:

·          Propane - If you use propane to heat your home, have the tank filled early in the fall season.  Check it often.

·          Weather - Be aware of upcoming weather changes.

·          Keep in touch with your neighbors.  Checking on them and knowing when anyone has special needs is important.

· Get your name and phone number on the Phone Tree. It is used to get information out as quickly as possible. Call Barbara Godbold at    479-2190 or Brenda Straw at 479-2539.

·          Stock up!  Be prepared! Have at least a week’s supply of food and several weeks of dry or canned goods on hand.

·          Power and Phone outages may occur. Stock up on fresh batteries and keep your cell phone charged.

·          Prescriptions - Stay current on all your medications.  If possible try to get at least a month ahead on refills.

·          Gila County Emergency Management Hotline. This number is periodically updated with information that will give you information for any assistance you may need. Keep it handy.  1-928-402-8888 or 1-800-304-4452 ext. 8888 Emergency Center Information;Gila County Emergency Management    (GCEM) will assist residents when the creek is impassable.  An emergency center will be opened at TBFD Station 2 off Mimosa Street on Elm Street. 

Tonto Basin Marketplace will take orders for groceries and GCEM will bring them to TBFD Station 2.

 Post Office mail will be picked up and delivered.  You must drop off your key at Station 2.  Your mail will be delivered the next day the center is open.

 If the creek is in flood stage for an extended time the Forest Service will issue parking permits for east side residents to park vehicles at Indian Point and Cholla Ramp.  Permits will be issued at the emergency center.

 Volunteers will open the station for services three days a week from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Days will be announced once the center is open.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IT WILL TAKE 5 TO 7 DAYS FOR THE EMERGENCY CENTER TO BECOME OPERATIONAL.  IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT RESIDENTS HAVE RESOURCES ON HAND FOR 5 TO 7 DAYS. 

We We cannot depend on help from local food banks because of the current economy.
